More Action in the Paid Sick Days Campaign – Saturday July 18
Greetings BC Employment Standards Coalition members and supporters:
Momentum is growing in support of paid sick leave. Please join us in paid sick days campaign actions in Vancouver and Victoria on Saturday, July 18th.
We will be taking to the streets on Saturday from 11:00AM – 1:30PM in PPE and wearing Doctor costumes to offer passers-by unofficial “prescriptions” for paid sick days as a cure for workplace woes, injustices and ailments.
We ask that you bring: Your own masks and gloves, a Doctor’s outfit, and optional signs, posters and side-walk chalk! (And of course, water and healthy snacks) “Prescription” sheets will be provided.
Everyone is invited to participate! In Vancouver the action will be in front of MLA Melanie Mark’s constituency office, 1070 – 1641 Commercial Drive (at 1st). If you can’t attend in person, you can send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org as her constituency office is presently closed. We may also at the same time have an action in front of MLA and cabinet minister Shane Simpson’s constituency office, 2365 Hastings Street East (at Nanaimo).
We are continuing to collaborate in this campaign with the Retail Action Network in Victoria who have circulated the following action notice:
The fight for paid sick days is ongoing. Thank you for your support.
We are in phase 3 of the recovery period which means that workers are returning to work without paid sick days. The provincial government needs to put forward tangible worker protection laws and real enforcement in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to support precarious workers during these difficult economic times.
Week of Action for Paid Sick Days
Beginning on Monday, July 13th until Saturday, July 18th we will be asking RAN members and friends to join us by participating in a week of action to amp up the pressure for paid sick days. Leading up to the day of action on July 18th, Members of Retail Action Network and the Employment Standards Coalition will be meeting over Zoom with MLA’s on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland to discuss our demands and to ask for their commitment to protect workers.
Here are three ways that you can make a difference right now:
- Call Premier Horgan this week and let him know that all workers need paid sick days. Visit here for a sample call script and to easily get connected to the Premier’s office.
- Join this Saturday’s Day of Action happening from coast-to-coast on July 18th. We’ll be handing out ‘prescriptions’ for paid sick days to spread the word we need paid sick days now! Week of Action Details here:
