Dear Ledcor Marine Workers,
Re: Message from ILWU Local 400 President

ILWU Local 400 is committed to growing the Marine Industry in BC. We work cooperatively with all our employers to increase work for our members. We will represent your interests when we collectively work with you and your employer at Ledcor Marine.

We are a strong union and provide excellent representation. In recent negotiations with Seaspan ULC, we stood strong and protected our working conditions and benefits. This was very challenging and created some animosity, but once the deal was signed, we sat down with the employer and have been working with them to promote our industry on behalf of our members ever since. We also know that working with the employer has the best results for all parties.

We hereby commit to all the Ledcor Marine employees that when you vote to join ILWU Local 400, we will sit down with you and develop a strategy with your input to work with Ledcor Marine and find ways to improve your conditions and increase employment.

We know that you have been asking your employer for improved safety standards and better working conditions for years, and you have been ignored. It is time for change. Please vote ILWU.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Engler
President, ILWU Local 400

THE BENEFITS OF JOINING ILWU:

You will have input in your workplace because ILWU can help you negotiate policies that affect your job;

You will have job security because your seniority will be respected, and your job cannot be bumped by other members;

Good Unions like the ILWU give many workers a collective voice and workplace power;

You and your co-workers will have excellent union representation. ILWU fights for their member’s rights.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A UNION ORGANIZING CAMPAIGN?

  1. A substantial majority of your co-workers have expressed interest in joining ILWU Local 400, because they want to improve working conditions and have job security.
  2. The ILWU has filed a union certification application to the BC Labour Board to represent seafarers at Ledcor Marine.
  3. The BC Labour Board will issue a date for marine workers to vote to unionize with the ILWU. A minimum of 50% + 1 must vote YES to unionize with ILWU.
  4. When you cast your secret ballot on voting day, please vote YES. The majority of your co-workers want to be members of ILWU Local 400, and they are voting YES.

REMEMBER:

Under the BC Labour Code, employees are free to join a union and participate in it’s activities without fear of retribution. Your employer cannot fire, suspend, transfer or in any way punish you for joining a union or promoting union membership to other employees. Your employer cannot intimidate or threaten you for taking part in a union organizing drive.

Your employer will never know who signed a union card or how many workers signed a union card, nor do they have the right to ask if you have signed a union card.
