On March 21 1931, while working on the construction the main chimney at the pulp mill in Powell River, 3 workers fell to their deaths. All were recent immigrants from Italy who had come to Canada under an immigration program and found work there building the pulp mill. My Grandfather, Stephen James Smith, and who was a signing charter member of the union local and had brought the union to Powell River was their supervisor and was present that day that this tragedy occurred. The 3 workers that died that day were Giovanni Pelosa, age 33, Giuseppe Morello, age 29, and Primo Gobbo, aged 26. Let us also remember this event so that they are not forgotten.
